Timeless Adventures #8 – We had to leave Spain. 11 hours drive to Lisbon, Portugal

We had to leave Barcelona. We had to leave Spain. We were too paranoid to stay because of the cops so we had an 11 hours drive towards Lisbon, Portugal.

No, okay. This sounds so dramatic and it wasn’t that bad. We weren’t followed by the police like it sounds. Like criminals. We just changed our plans to have a road trip in Spain before Portugal. We wanted to pause our tries to get the license for Shanty and read more into how we can get our papers translated into Spanish.

We had a long drive towards Portugal. 1 248 km. A lot of pee pauses. Gas filling. Yeah, you know the drill with a long road trip. We were a little bit sad about leaving Barcelona already. We wanted to stay at least 3-4 weeks. Well, sometimes plans have to be changed and it’s just for us to accept that. Heading towards Portugal and Lisbon included one-night sleep in Spain on the road to be able to continue the drive early the day after. The thing with this free place was that it was located in a little neighborhood with only some houses. Nothing else. It was, as I wrote, for free. Why did they build a place like that in the middle of nowhere? I was wondering the whole night because it made me paranoid. Again.

However, we survived that night too! Surprise! But we woke up at 5 or 6 in the morning to continue the drive and arrive before the dark. We were driving into a crazy cold Portugal. It was up about 16 degrees and that was cold to what we had been used to in Barcelona and Italy. When we got to Lisbon we checked into a campsite approximately 8 km into the city center. So we had to take the bus the day after when we planned to walk around in the city.

But it was rainy, windy and cold in Portugal. Is this what Portugal was at this time of the year? Cold and rainy. We decided in that moment that we will check out Portugal then head over to Spain again to fix the license and stay there for a while instead and maybe work a little. But who knew (yeah, my mom knew) that we would love Portugal later on. But that’s another story.

CARMEN & FRANSISCO

Do you remember the couple that we met at the Ferry? Carmen och Fran? Yeah, we kept in contact with this couple and all the sudden we were in Lisbon at the exact same time. We decided to hang out in Lisbon together and we also had a free guide. Carmen has been living in Lisbon for 7 years and that meant that she knew the whole city. How perfect is that?

We decided to meet up in the city. Because we wanted to go in earlier and then meet them later on that day when they were ready. Therefore we had to take the bus. We woke up early that day, ate breakfast and then headed over to the bus. The bus came and we started to get on board when the bus driver points at the dog and says:

NO!

And then points over the road for a dog hostel.

Is it because of the breed or is it all dogs?

NO, No dogs!

But is it because of the breed or all dogs?!

No dogs.

Yeah, we had to go back. And no way that we’re leaving her behind at a “dog hostel”. We didn’t know if it was because of the breed or all dogs but we read about it later on. Apparently, dogs aren’t allowed on the buses in Portugal. So… we had a problem to get into town. To walk wasn’t an option and a taxi with our budget was a joke. But hey, Carmen and Fran were saviors. They came and picked us up and drove us into town.

This was really not a touristy visit. We walked around. Upp for hills. We talked, We laughed, Visited a brothel. Alright, the brothel was actually an old one that they had turned into a bar instead. But they saved some details from the former brothel into the bar. It was actually really cool. We walked around even more and that resulted in that we missed the city a little bit. No worries for us. We had the best time with these two crazy people from Spain, living in Germany, but have been living in Portugal, Italy, and England. You know when you find people you can joke with without anybody being offended, sarcasm obligatory in all conversations, deep talks about life, world, and society etc. Discussions where we all didn’t agree with each other, but still accepted it. Yeah, that kind of friendship. That time when you have known each other for only a couple of hours but it feels like for life. That’s amazing!

A LOT OF VEGAN FOOD

We found this amazing vegan restaurant the first night. The food temple. A place where they had amazing food options and there among sushi and… sushi bowl. This bowl was incredible and the guys had a bean burger with root crops fries. Yep, it was a good night but the funniest was when we went out a second time with them. They took us the “The forbidden restaurant”. This was a restaurant located in an old apartment. The reason it’s called forbidden is that they’re not allowed to serve food. You order everything on post its and your receipt is a … post it. Its doodle all over the walls and we couldn’t be worse than do the same. You might think that a place like this is going to give you food poisoning. But actually, the food was really really good. And it was cheap. We ate, 4 people, 4 meals, and 3 drinks = 20 Euro. Great place and a little bit different.

We hung out with them during a couple of days in Lisbon but after five days Melvin and I decided to head down south. Towards the warmth. Because it was still not that warm in Lisbon. We were heading towards Ericeira. The surfing paradise. And we don’t even surf…

Until next time spread love guys!
